When shipping personal items to China, it is diffrent from shipping to other countries. While in many countries, a shipment can be cleared by the consignee ( the individual who is receiving the goods), in China a custom broker has to be used to custom clear shipments. It takes much more days to custom clear the shipments compared with other countries.
When you ship something as small packages using the services of FedEx or DHL, they can deliver to the consignee's door, however, they are not able to custom clear the shipments. They have to be cleared customs by the customs broker hired by the consignee. So, when you ship something to China, make sure that the consignee there knows about this and can use the services of some local customs broker. This shold be okay for experienced importors but companies or individuals with no import/export may have difficulty once the shipment gets there.

preparing your packing list
When shipping your personal staff internationally, you need to make a list of the contents in each box your shipping. This document is called packing list (some people call it "packing slip").
In packing list, you need to write the description of the goods, quantity, and the amount for each item.
This can be a time-consuming work but it does not have to be miticulous. It is not necessary to write the titles of the books although I notice some people actually do it. Just brief descriptions like clothing, books, cd's, digital cameras would be fine. However, descriptions as household goods, souvenirs, electric applicance would be way too general. If you make a detailed list, it wuold perhaps give customs offices a good impression that you are honest and customs clearance for your shipment is likely to go smoothly. This document is hard to submit before pickup of the shipment, so send it it to us by fax or email after your packages have been picked up hopefully withing the day or the follwoing day. Packing list will be used for both customs clearance and insurance purposes.

Tansit time for sea shipments
Nowadays the transit time of ocean vessels are quite short. The transit time from Tokyo port to Long Beach port in California is about eleven days. For Asian destinations, it takes only several days. However, note that it takes a number of days for sea shipments to be cleared customs, being loaded into containers, then the containers to vessles. In addition, the ship is available normally on a weekly basis, thus making the ocean shipments take long time in the end. Actual transit time from Tokyo to arrival Los Angels would be about three to four weeks or so.
Usually average transit times via sea are as follows (from pickup in Tokyo 23 wards area to arrival the final destination terminal excluding the time needed for taking the containers from the vessels to container yards then to container freight station which should take a few days) :
Los Angeles: 20 - 30 days
Sydney: 30 to 40 dadays
Melbourne: 35 to 45 days
Southamton(UK): 45 to 55 days

regulations at the destination country well as in some countries
there are restrictions on import of motorcycles.
The United States, for example, do not allow the import of motor vehicles
which do not meet the EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) standards.
This EPA standards to restrict the import will apply to other goods
which may possibly pollute the air as well. To be exported from Japan,
a document certifying that the motorcycle has been registered by the
local city office is required. This serve as a proof that the motorcycle
belonged to the person who is shipping it and that it is not a stolen one.
You also need to drain engine oil and gasoline.
